Did You Know...

... that XP8 and the French 8-way Open Class team may battle again at the indoor world meet?

8-way awards at Weembi Lille 2019
posted Mar 3rd, 2025 - The NSL News mentioned on February 25th that a French 8-way team will compete at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 in April. Aethers Medjay member Tom Mattoni explained during the second NSL Live Talk at Paraclete XP that his younger brother Noe Mattoni is in the 8-way lineup of No Name who won the French 8-way qualification at the Weembinamic 2024.

8-way competition has been a part of indoor world championships only once so far. Weembi Lille's flying chamber is large enough to accommodate 8-way training and competition, and the wind tunnel in France hosted the event and the first 8-way competition in 2019. Weembi Lille and Paraclete XP both have been hosting other 8-way events for several years before and after Weembi 2019.

Paraclete XP8 won the 8-way competition in 2019, and they are the defending champions this April, as no other indoor world championship included 8-way competition ever since. The 31.6 average is still the standing 8-way world record average, and the 44-pointer in Round 6 (M,Q,J,16) is the world record for a single round. The 44-pointer was not scored by Paraclete XP8's 2019 lineup though. It was the French 8-way team in 2nd place who outscored the U.S. 8-way team by one point in Round 6.

Two No Name members had their next world record opportunity in Round 10 (4,1,3) of the Weembinamic 2024, which was set ahead of the competition as the sequence for the last round. Martial Ferre and Gaelle Giesen had posted the 44-pointer with their 2019 lineup (Pamela Lissajoux, Damien Gouriou, Alban Rumolo, Aurelien Lemaire, Kevin Mansion, Charles Rommel), and they had a new lineup for the new 8-way Super Sequence.

Marie Pineau, Mathias Barbaste, Fabrice Blouin, Thomas Chomel, Noe Mattoni and Thomas Misztal competed for No Name at the Weembinamic 2024, who posted the 40-pointer in Round 10. XP8 members Jeana Billings and Kirk Verner were watching the performance of the new French national indoor team in 8-way Open for the world championship. They competed with Infinite Octane at the same Weembinamic.

The new French 8-way lineup is an interesting one, a combination of a wealth of comprehensive 8-way indoor experience with Martial Ferre and world-class 4-way and 8-way competitor Gaelle Giesen. She was in the French 8-way lineup who were one single point behind Airspeed XP8 after the seven rounds in Tanay 2021, Pamela Lissajoux, Damien Gouriou and Alban Rumolo, were her team mates at Weembi Lille 2019 and Tanay 2021, and they will all compete in 4-way at the upcoming indoor world championship next month.

No Name at the Weembinamic 2024
8-way awards at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2025
No Name's Marie Pineau is Pamela Lissajoux's 4-way Women team mate at Paraclete XP and would have double duties in 4-way and 8-way if the French delegation follows through with the lineups of the Weembinamic 2024. Tom Mattoni's brother Noe Mattonie, Thomas Chomel, and Thomas Misztal were team mates in the best French 4-way junior teams and still competed together in 4-way Open last year.

Martial Ferre's new 8-way team has a lot of potential with this combination of experience and talent. XP8 world champions Jeana Billings and Kirk Verner were probably watching the French 8-way performance at the Weembinamic 2024 very carefully.

No Name did not travel to North Carolina last month to test the flying chamber at Paraclete XP, as Aethers Medjay did. Only Martial Ferre was once again at the place where he has been every year for 8-way Hell Week. His QRF signature lineup disbanded, and he competed only with Platinum XP8 after his next 8-way Hell Week. It was his turn to watch XP8 carefully this time. Jeana Billings and Kirk Verner have a new lineup, as well, who won the 8-way competition at Paraclete XP. Jeana Billings, John D'Annunzio Kirk Verner and Andrew Happick have four new team mates with Jennifer Davidson, Jill Stephenson, Brandon Kashani and Ian Pedowitz.
