Did You Know...

... that Arizona Airspeed won the second half of the indoor world championship?

FAI silver medals at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025: Arizona Airspeed

posted Apr 17th, 2025 - NSL Live Talk with Arizona Airspeed concluded the NSL News coverage of the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 live from Paraclete XP. It was the complete combination of the previous and the current Airspeed lineups who took the time to evaluate their meet experiences after the completion of all rounds and before the award ceremony on Saturday.

Three reigning 4-way world champions (Niklas Hemlin, Joey Marshall, Chris Kuhlmann) and new tail Doug Hendrix had taken the 2nd place, after a 10-round battle with NMP PCH HayaBusa. New outside center Alisson de Vargas had competed for Airspeed at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2025 just a few weeks ago and finished in 4th place with a 27.1 average.

He was not eligible to compete for the U.S. delegation at the indoor world championship, where he was only a part of the audience and observed very carefully how his new team mates would perform with Niklas Hemlin in his slot of the past five years, and with new tail Doug Hendrix. However, Alisson de Vargas explained that he was actually following the rear piece action at least as carefully as he paid attention to the front piece. The other four Airspeed members at the NSL Live Talk confirmed that their own pieces are only half of the 4-way puzzle and how important it is to know and understand all slots.

New tail Doug Hendrix was showing especially in the second half of the indoor competition what Joey Marshall and Chris Kuhlmann expect as a result from their new lineup. The Airspeed lineup with Niklas Hemlin and Doug Hendrix won the total of the rounds in the second half of the meet (Rounds 6 - 10) over Aethers Medjay (172 - 170) by two points.

Aethers Medjay won the competition with a strong start, which had to be expected. The French lineup has been training and competing together since 2022, while the Airspeed lineup at Paraclete XP was totally new, at least with tail Doug Hendrix, who was convincing his new team mates that he can pick up the Airspeed pace very quickly.

Observer Alisson de Vargas just has to fill Niklas Hemlin's slot adequately, and Arizona Airspeed will be back in business, maybe much earlier than they might have expected and hoped for. However, Niklas Hemlin is one of the strongest and most successful outside centers in the history of the sport, and Alisson de Vargas has to fill a very large slot. On the other hand, the performance of Doug Hendrix at Paraclete XP is showing the very promising results of Joey Marshall's and Chris Kuhlmann's long and careful recruiting campaign. Alisson de Vargas could fill the outside center slot like Doug Hendrix did at the indoor world championship to move the new Airspeed closer to Aethers Medjay than the French team may have expected.

U.S. indoor champions 2025: Golden Knights
The next showdown is coming up this weekend when both teams will be back in action at Skydive DeLand in Florida. Arizona Airspeed will attend their first outdoor competition with the new lineup, while Niklas Hemlin is coaching the Golden Knights, Airspeed’s strongest U.S. opponent his year.

In fact, the U.S. Army team is the new indoor champion after defeating Arizona Airspeed and Tunnel Vision both at the national indoor championship at the end of February. The Shamrock Showdown is featuring both battles, as Golden Knights and Arizona Airspeed, possibly SDC Rhythm XP, as well, will be trying to qualify as the U.S. national team in 4-way Open this year in October, Airspeed now and in the future only with the new lineup. The winner of this U.S. showdown will be facing Aethers Medjay at the outdoor world championship next year.

Arizona Airspeed and Golden Knights will define their starting point into the very important U.S. outdoor season in DeLand, while the French national team gets an idea how far ahead they are at this point in time. There is no doubt that Aethers Medjay will win at the Shamrock Showdown 2025, and the main question is about the distance to the U.S. teams. All three teams have been at Skydive DeLand for a few days, and the competition draw will take place later today, hopefully with new Block 20 in one of the ten rounds.
