Did You Know...

... that Thomas, Tim and Moritz Mack competed together for Airbus 4-way?

Airbus 4-way at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2024
posted Apr 23rd, 2025 - The NSL News has covered special family lineups in 4-way competition for many years, as it is a fascinating topic when parents, brothers and sisters jump from air planes together. The most recent story was the one of the Mattoni family (father Stephane, sons Tom and Noe) who visited Paraclete XP for the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025. NSL Live Talk with the Mattoni family was posted with the update on April 16th.

Germany had its own family story, as well, when Joern and Max Thiele dominated 4-way competition in Germany with Paratec-Saar for several years. They competed together for Germany in 4-way at three outdoor world championship (2008, 2010, 2012), and they were usually in the German national 8-way at the same time. Their father Professor Hanshelmut Thiele was a 4-way and 8-way competitor in his days, as well. The NSL News update on January 31st mentioned that Joern and Max Thiele will be back this year for the reigning German 8-way champions and FAI bronze medalists of Operation Adler.

In the meantime, their former 8-way team mate Thomas Mack has developed his own family lineup, as well. The NSL News reported on 3 October 2024 that Tim Mack would be filming his father Tom Mack for Airbus at the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships in October last year. It was a short call for Tim Mack who had still competed himself as outside center for Teiwaz at the German Outdoor Nationals 2024. He had little time to prepare for his slot on Airbus camera and still caused only two point deductions in the ten rounds, which had no impact on the final Airbus placing on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard.

Airbus Illertissen at the Shamrock Showdown 2025 - NSL Live Talk
Airbus 4-way at the Shamrock Showdown 2025
The next Airbus update introduced Tim Mack as the new point on January 4th. Thomas Mack and Felix Pfeiffer had finalized their plans how to continue with the Airbus 4-way team, and Tim Mack switched from the camera slot to point. 4-way Women team Meltemi's former member Claire Rebhahn completed the new Airbus lineup.

They used the winter time in Germany to prepare the new lineup for the outdoor season of 2025 and did not attend any indoor competition. The outdoor world championship was the last event for the team, and the new lineup would attend their first competition at the Shamrock Showdown 2025.

Airbus visited Skydive DeLand for a 2-week training camp with coach Solly Williams, and Thomas Mack had the next family surprise for the NSL News. The update on April 6th introduced Tim's older brother Moritz Mack as the new Airbus videographer. The new Airbus lineup completed approx. 100 training jumps at Skydive DeLand before the Shamrock Showdown, and Round 1 in DeLand would be the first competition performance since Round 10 at Crystal Coast in October last year.

Airbus Illertissen at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2024 and the German Outdoor Nationals 2024
$200 skin for Airbus in Round 8
The interview with the three Mack's and Claire Rebhahn after the Shamrock Showdown was a team affair this time. The NSL News had a conversation with Tom and Tim Mack, and with coach Solly Williams, during the German outdoor championship last year when Tim Mack was not even assigned to the camera slot for the outdoor world championship.

Tom, Tim and Moritz Mack met with the NSL News and their new team mate Claire Rebhahn after the Shamrock Showdown and before their return trip to Germany. New inside center Felix Pfeiffer had already left DeLand.

Airbus lost five points due to camera angles after the exit. Brother Tim and Moritz Mack can now work together to clean up the Airbus performance in front and behind the camera. Airbus finished the first outdoor competition for the new lineup with a very promising 16.5 average after the total of nine point deductions. The 17+ performance level already matches the previous lineup after Round 10 at their first outdoor world championship in Eloy 2022. It seems like Airbus will be back in the race for the unofficial amateur world championship title in 2026. The clean 23-pointer in Round 8 represents the performance that team and coach expect for ten rounds in September this year. The same round won one of the five $200 skins at the Shamrock Showdown. However, Thomas Mack pointed out that his new lineup still has to win the national outdoor championship this year to qualify for the world meet next year.
