Did You Know...

... that China Women and Airdrops improved their rankings after Round 8?

4-way Women awards at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025
posted Apr 30th, 2025 - The NSL News aftermath of the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 continues with the combined AAA Class leaderboard of the competition in 4-way Open and 4-way Women. Teams in both categories use exactly the same competition draw and have still been separated at FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor events since 2001.

Only complete lineups are separated by gender, while the majority of teams consist of combinations of male and female members. However, it is not mandatory that all-female lineups have to compete in 4-way Women. The FAI/ISC rules allow them to sign up for the 4-way Open Class competition if they wish so, while any male competitors are not eligible for competition in the 4-way Women event.

One of the rare examples was the French national team in 4-way Women, who competed in 4-way Open at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2012. They finished in 5th place on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard in Prostejov. Only a few months later, they won the gold medals in 4-way Women at the FAI Dubai Mondial 2012 with the same lineup. There is an exception though in 4-way outdoor competition, where the same rules allow male competitors to be on camera for 4-way Women teams, even though the team videographers are considered as full team members and receive FAI medals in 4-way Open if their teams place in one of the first three positions.

France in 4-way Open at the FAI World Cup 2014
British 4-way Women team NFTO switched to 4-way Open Class competition for a different reason at the recent indoor world championship. Sian Stokes was not available for the event, and Pete Allum replaced her at Paraclete XP. NFTO had to compete in 4-way Open, even though their 26.1 average would have tied them in 3rd place with XPG4 on the 4-way Women leaderboard. The lineup at Paraclete XP finished in 5th place on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard, tied in 7th place on the combined AAA Class leaderboard.

The NSL News update from the indoor world championship on April 11th had featured the combined AAA Class leaderboard after Round 8. It was the end of the second day of the competition, with semifinals (Round 9) and finals (Round 10) scheduled for Saturday.

Not much changed on the top of the combined leaderboard after Round 8, even though the dominating leader, Aethers Medjay from France, did not win or tie any of the last three rounds. Arizona Airspeed and NMP PCH HayaBusa at least sent a warning to French national coach Mathieu Bernier and his team that they have the potential to challenge them again in the near future. However, any changes of ranking positions are meaningful for the teams who improve, and who are usually engaged in their own battles across the leaderboard.

Realfly Fire (CH) - Airdrops (CH) at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025
France in 4-way Women at the FAI Dubai Mondial 2012
The changes that happened between Round 8 and Round 10 could not be noticed on the two separated traditional leaderboards in 4-way Open and 4-way Women, where almost all teams finished in the same ranking positions as after Round 8. Only the Qatar Lions dropped from 5th to 7th place in the closest 3-team battle (NFTO, FlyX Amnesya) of the whole competition.

Two 4-way Women teams also improved their ranking positions on the combined leaderboard. China's winners in 4-way Women were one single point behind Skywalkers Junior after Round 8. China was under enough pressure from the French Nephtys in the race for the FAI gold medals in 4-way Women, while the young Czech team were secure in 4th place on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard.

China's 35-pointer in Round 10 finally won the 4-way Women competition, and also the indirect battle with Skywalkers Junior by two points at the same time. Swiss 4-way Women team Airdrops were one single point behind Brazil's 4-way Open Class team Netunos after Round 8 and turned this table with their probably best meet performance in the last round. The 25-pointer matched the score of the Swiss team in 4-way Open, Realfly Fire, and it placed Airdrops right behind their country's other national team on the combined leaderboard.
