posted May 4th, 2025 - The NSL News aftermath of the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 concludes the competition of the six expected contenders for the unofficial amateur world championship title with the 2-point battle between Sweden's Echochamber and Spain's military Papea lineup.

There is no clear definition between the professional and the amateur status in Formation Skydiving competition. There is no doubt though that at least the Swedish team matches any criteria of a recreational 4-way team, while the Spanish team is surely in a different position. They are full-time soldiers for the Spanish military, where they have their own obligations that keep them from training 4-way all the time.

The major difference is probably the financial situation between the state-sponsored military services and the wages of a full-time soldier in duty, compared to the personal budget of each Echochamber member. Papea and Echchamber have numerous 4-way battles at indoor and outdoor events behind them, and the Spaniards won the previous indoor duel by three points at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024 in China. Echochamber won the outdoor duel at the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships and maintained the upper hand by two points at Paraclete XP last month, after the changes in Papea's lineup last year.

Echochamber - Papea at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025

The Czech Skywalkers Junior amateurs were still considered one of the six contenders for the 4th place at the last NSL Power Rankings before the start of the competition, even though they were upgraded to the position of the top contender. Then they surprised everybody after distancing themselves by 29 points from the other five teams who were aiming at the 4th place.

The final 4-way Open Class leaderboard is showing how close the competition between the same five teams was throughout the whole competition, disregarding the Czech 4-way youngsters. Six points separated Papea in 9th place from NFTO and FlyX Amesya tied in 5th place, and each team of this group claimed or tied highscores between each other round by round.

Echochamber won Round 7 clearly, despite a point deduction, and tied Skywalkers Junior with the 25-pointer. In fact, the 26-pointer before the penalty would have tied bronze medalist NMP PCH HayaBusa's score in the same round. Papea in 9th place started into the competition by matching the highest amateur score behind Skywalkers Junior in Round 1. Similar to Echochamber in Round 7, they won Round 4 of this group clearly, and the 35-pointer outscored Arizona Airspeed at the end of the first competition day.

NFTO - FlyX Amnesya - Qatar Lions at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025

NFTO claimed or tied four of the highscores, which set the Open Class lineup with Pete Allum at the top of the same group. Italy's FlyX Amnesya lineup won the last round, which tied them with NFTO in 5th place. There is no extra round to break ties behind the medal positions, and NFTO would be the winner of this duel with the highest score of the meet in Round 8.

The performance of Skywalkers Junior becomes even more impressive with a closer look at the highscores of the previously expected top contenders for the unofficial amateur world championship title. Even the highest scores of the five teams behind the Czech team combined would not have been enough to outscore Skywalkers Junior.

The highscores for each round would add up to a total of 279 points for the 5-team group. Skywalkers Junior finished with 290 points, eleven points ahead of the combined scores of the same five teams. Skywalkers Junior still paid more of their attention to the scores of the teams in medal positions, which they were a part of until Round 4. They could not get anywhere close yet to the French Aethers Medjay. However, they outscored Arizona Airspeed in two rounds, NMP PCH HayaBusa once, and they tied the Belgian scores in two more rounds. It was the first time for Skywalkers Junior to face the best 4-way teams in the world directly. It was only the beginning of more to come in the near future.
