Did You Know...

... that NMP PCH HayaBusa's Ray Lodens has passed the 1000+ level?

Aethers Medjay with Cameron Malie at the Weembinamic 2024
posted May 16th, 2025 - Aethers Medjay, the new French 4-way indoor and outdoor leader in the world, have attended five competitions since they placed 2nd behind Arizona Airspeed at the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships in October 2024. National coach Mathieu Bernier then planned to send his national team in 4-way Open into as many battles as possible to collect competition experiences.

The Aethers lineup consists of some of the youngest top contenders in 4-way competition, and meet experience is a major factor on the top level. The three youngest team members (Tom Mattoni, Alban Rumolo, Mathieu Quizy) resumed with indoor competition the next month after the outdoor world championship and completed the ten rounds of the Weembinamic 2024 with their new team videographer, Cameron Malie. The NSL News introduced the new Aethers member on May 13th.

Aethers followed up at the Wind Games 2025, where they showed the whole 4-way world for the first time what they have in mind for the next two years until the next outdoor world championship. The field at the Wind Games included the former 4-way indoor and outdoor world champions of NMP PCH HayaBusa with their own new lineup. The Belgians did not attend the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2025, where Aethers Medjay repeated their message. However, HayaBusa were back in action at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 at the same place, while they had already transitioned to outdoor training.

NMP PCH HayaBusa did not copy the travel agenda of the Aethers, who delivered the next message at the Shamrock Showdown 2025 with the perfectly clean 10-round performance an average-point higher than at Crystal Coast 2024. HayaBusa took a break and traveled to Florida a month later for more outdoor training.

The NSL News visited their training site at Skydive City in February and discussed the situation after the Wind Games and the U.S. indoor championship at Paraclete XP. Now they are back again in Florida, a month after the Shamrock Showdown, and it was time to discuss the results of the first outdoor competition of the year and the best 4-way teams in the world.

NMP PCH HayaBusa were not overly impressed with the performance and the scoring level of the French Aethers. This is probably not a surprise, as at least three of the current team members (David Grauwels, Dennis Praet, Jeroen Nollet) have performed on even higher levels in their 4-way careers. Aethers Medjay have the 34.1 average at the Wind Games in their records, while the same three HayaBusa members are still the only 4-way team in history who posted 35+ indoor averages twice, and the same lineup also own the highest outdoor average ever with the 28.9 at the USPA Nationals 2019.

It is still not only the fact that David Grauwels (now on camera), Dennis Praet and Jeroen Nollet are familiar with the French performance level, and that they know how to get there, that makes them deal in a quite relaxed way with the current French dominance in 4-way competition.

Their position is supported by hard scoring numbers of the new lineup who started training and competing together in November 2023. They were still miles behind Arizona Airspeed (61) and Aethers (40) at the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships in October last year, after a year of training.

It was already a shorter distance at the Wind Games (33) even though indoor competition exposes differences more significantly than outdoor meets. The distance to Aethers Medjay was down to 23 points at the next direct confrontation at the indoor world championship last month. The performance progression with young team mate Ray Lodens is probably the most promising part of the Belgian confidence level. Ray Lodens made his 1000th skydive when the NSL News was visiting, and the NSL TV camera was ready to record the celebration. French national coach Mathieu Bernier and his Aethers know that they cannot maintain their unchallenged top position by only confirming their current performance level. The FAI Outdoor World Cup at the end of August will be the next showdown between the best 4-way teams in the world.
