Did You Know...

... that German Airbus videographer Erik Lorenz scored nine points in Round 5?

Airbus 8-way with videographer Erik Lorenz
posted Sep 1st, 2025 - The 2025 story of the German national 8-way team, Airbus Oceanside Illertissen, began when team captain Thomas "Spieli" Spielvogel decided to join previous opponent Operation Adler, who had competed for Germany with their own 2024 lineup at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2024. Steffen Schiedek became the new team captain and recruited a new 2025 lineup, with 4-way and 8-way veterans Henning Stumpp and Uli Sehrbrock replacing Thomas Spielvogel and Holger Sass. Main goal for the year was the participation at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025.

New member Uli Sehrbrock had to withdraw right before the main training camp of the year, and Manfred Moritz was available to fill the slot. The team managed to complete approx. 60 training jumps with the next new team member and arrived ready for 8-way action at Skydive Teuge.

The NSL News covered the rollercoaster performance in the first four rounds, which still left The German 8-way team in full contention for the FAI bronze medals after Round 4. The same update also mentioned the bad luck in Round 4 that forced team member and DFV President Henning Stumpp out of action for the remainder of the meet with a broken foot bone. Team captain saw a solution after studying the rules and discussed it with the FAI Jury on site. Nothing was in the way for Airbus to continue officially in the competition with their team videographer Erik Lorenz switching from behind the camera into the active lineup.

NSL Live Talk with Airbus members Karin Bauch, Erik Lorenz, Steffen Schiedek
Airbus 8-way with competitor Erik Lorenz
Airbus only needed a new videographer who had to be a member of the German delegation, according to the FAI/ISC rules. Freestyle videographer Christian Kaufmann agreed to film the 8-way team, as well, and the new Airbus lineup with tail Erik Lorenz resumed the 8-way action on Sunday with Round 5.

The Airbus members knew that they would compromise the athletic side of the competition, however, they were ready to take the situation as it is and welcomed Erik Lorenz into the active lineup. The FAI world cup bronze medals were naturally out of reach with the strong U.S. opponents, while they would still be the strongest European 8-way team, even with their new tail.

Erik Lorenz was already showing in his first competition round that he was ready to help Airbus maintain the distance to the two British 8-way teams and the Dutch home team. They outscored all three teams easily and were four points behind Bra Nok in 5th place. Erik Lorenz's team mates Karin Bauch and team captain Steffen Schiedek were available to explain the whole Airbus 8-way situation to the NSL News before the next 8-way round for the same new lineup would be called. They said during NSL Live Talk that their new videographer had all scoring formations in frame after a briefing with Erik Lorenz. Airbus have all nine scoring points on the leaderboard without a flaw on the scoresheet.
