Did You Know...

... that Papea had the shortest transition time from outdoor to indoor?

posted Dec 8th, 2025 - The dramatic and unfortunate Papea story at the CISM World Championship was covered earlier by the NSL News, most recently on November 28th. The last three rounds of the meet were canceled due to the weather conditions in Qatar, which halted Spain’s national team’s strong recovery after the first two rounds in 4-way Male. Competition stopped after Round 5 of the scheduled eight rounds, leaving Papea just outside the medals in 4th place.

Among all military teams competing in Qatar, Papea and NMP PCH HayaBusa were likely in the greatest hurry to return home, with indoor events on their schedules only days after the award ceremony in Doha. Switching from outdoor to indoor competition is generally easier than the opposite, but jet lag affects both directions alike. The time difference between Qatar and Western Europe is eight hours.

For NMP PCH HayaBusa members Neal Willems and Ray Lodens, the post-CISM schedule was less demanding. They were able to enjoy competing with various teams at the ISR Grand Prix 2025, which primarily serves Dutch teams as a combined national indoor championship. Belgium had already completed their national indoor championship in February, where the new HayaBusa lineup secured another 4-way indoor title with a 26.2 average. For Ray Lodens, it was his first national indoor gold, followed by his first Belgian outdoor title at the BENELUX Championship 2025 and then CISM gold.

Papea at the CISM World Championship 2025
AAA Class awards at the Spanish Indoor Nationals 2025
The situation was different for Spain’s Papea 4-way team, who had just as little time as the two HayaBusa members to process the outcome of the CISM meet. Spain’s national indoor championship took place the same weekend Neal Willems and Ray Lodens were competing in Roosendaal—only days after all of them had returned from Qatar.

For Papea, winning the national indoor championship was essential to maintain their status as Spain’s national 4-way Open Class team. However, as in Belgium, Papea face little domestic opposition. Earlier this year, HayaBusa’s new lineup won the Belgian indoor title by 60 points over Ayro (262–202). Papea similarly dominated, finishing 39 points ahead of Windabona Angels just after returning from the CISM outdoor event.

Although transitioning from outdoor to indoor competition is generally easier than the reverse, Papea still had to cover the full FAI/ISC dive pool and unpredictable sequences at the national indoor championship. Even so, they remained comfortably ahead of their competitors. The current lineup has not yet returned to their form from the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 in April, which was to be expected. They now have four months to prepare for the Indoor World Cup at Weembi Lille and aim to surpass their 25.5 average. Their team record is a 27.4 average, achieved at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024 in China.
