Did You Know...

... that Michele Silvi had to buy beer for Aethers Remix?

NSL Live Talk with Aethers at Paraclete XP
posted Dec 16th, 2025 - The NSL News noticed that former French 4-way and 8-way world champion Julien Degen competed with six different teams at the Weembinamic 2025. The NSL News is accustomed to following his extensive 4-way and 8-way activity in his home chamber, Weembinamic Lille. Several other highly experienced 4-way and 8-way competitors also use the Weembinamic event as an opportunity to compete with multiple teams, as lineup restrictions are minimal. However, Julien Degen consistently stands out with the highest level of participation, unsurprising given that Weembi Lille is his home facility.

This strong focus on scores, leaderboards, and the multiple commitments of competitors in 4-way and 8-way events resulted in less attention being paid to other notable developments. One of them was the performance of the French indoor world champions, Aethers, who were clearly below their usual standard at the Weembinamic. At the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 at Paraclete XP, they had finished with an impressive 32.9 average, whereas they posted a 30.1 average at the Weembinamic. Another indication that something was different was the team’s name: they competed as Aethers Remix.

The lower average was not the result of an easier competition draw, nor was it caused by an unusual number of point deductions. As usual, Aethers performed cleanly, recording only four point deductions—the lowest among the top three teams on the traditional leaderboard.

FAI Indoor World Champions 2025: Aethers
French national coach Mathieu Bernier later explained to the NSL News that there was a clear reason behind the modified team name. It was neither related to a new sponsor nor to any marketing initiative. The four Aethers members simply indicated that something had been “mixed up.”

Damien Gouriou, Alban Rumolo, Tom Mattoni, and Mathieu Quizy competed together once again, but with a significant difference: they had completely remixed their slots for all ten Weembinamic rounds, following an hour of indoor training in the new positions they had chosen for the event.

The idea for the remix came spontaneously, as the full lineup explained during the latest NSL Live Talk on Monday. They felt that the relaxed atmosphere of the Weembinamic provided a perfect opportunity to learn more about themselves as a team and about their teammates’ slots. AAA Class teams are typically deeply familiar with the two slots of their piece—front piece (Outside Center/Point) and rear piece (Inside Center/Tail). While slot-switching sequences exist, it is very rare for teams to separate the usual piece partners entirely. Traditionally, the French front piece consists of Tom Mattoni (Outside Center) and Damien Gouriou (Point), while Alban Rumolo (Inside Center) and Mathieu Quizy (Tail) form the rear piece. Mathieu Bernier later informed the NSL News that during the Weembinamic, every member of his Open Class 4-way team flew a different slot in every one of the ten rounds.

Aethers Remix versus Yasuke in the semifinals of the Weembinamic 2025
Slot scramble at the Weembinamic 2025
An NSL News update on November 30th finally included these details. Tom Mattoni flew the point slot, while Aethers tail Mathieu Quizy became his piece partner as Outside Center. Damien Gouriou switched from Point to Inside Center, with Alban Rumolo as his Tail partner. In short, nothing remained the same.

To add to the complexity, all Aethers Remix members also competed with additional teams during the event, sometimes in yet different slots. This made the overall situation even more challenging to follow, both for NSL News and for the athletes themselves.

The story became even more interesting when Italian Yasuke player-coach Michele Silvi—former member of the NMP PCH HayaBusa 4-way world champions of 2021—challenged the remixed French national team to apply the popular left-hand pattern, a direction French and Belgian teams are generally less accustomed to. Yasuke, featuring three top-level player-coaches (Michele Silvi, Roy Janssen, and Livio Piccolo) alongside team founder Moulay Abbas, faced Aethers Remix in Rounds 7 and 8 of the semifinals. In Round 7, Aethers Remix accepted the challenge, adding an unfamiliar rotation direction and adjusted random-engineering to their already scrambled slot setup—and still won by five points. Michele Silvi lost the bet and had to buy the adult beverages for Aethers Remix. In Round 8, however, the French team returned to their familiar right-hand pattern.
