The beginning of the day had all three 8-way top contenders still in contention. Then came Round 7, and Paraclete XP fell out of it.
The 11-pointer had a dramatic impact, as the following events would show. Paraclete wanted to win and compete for the USA at the World Championship of Formation Skydiving next year in Russia. It was not even necessary to win the gold medals at the 2009 USPA National Skydiving Championships, as Airspeed announced at the award ceremony that they will compete only in 4-way next year.
It was only a 2-point difference between these two teams. The Golden Knights had won three rounds by one point each, Paraclete won Round 2 by one point. The teams tied their scores in the two other rounds.
Then came Round 7, and the difference grew to six point when Paraclete funneled the first formation of the sequence. Paraclete fought back as hard as possible after that and was able to reduce the difference back to two points. However, the team ran out of time and rounds, the Golden Knights ended up in second place and eventually with the tickets to Russia next year.
Airspeed already had a brief meeting in the team room after Round 10 and decided to announce at the award ceremony that they will only compete in 4-way. It must have been hard for the Paraclete members to end up only two points behind the slot for Russia.
Airspeed won the 8-way competition by seven points over the Golden Knights and nine points over Paraclete XP.
