Did You Know...

... that Ian Bobo used a Halloween trick at the USPA Nationals 2009?

World record show after Round 6
posted Nov 3rd, 2009 - It takes a while to catch up with a major event, such as a the 2009 USPA National Skydiving Championships.

In fact, it is almost impossible to cover every little detail of so many teams that get together at the same time.

NSL-TV has not uploaded too many of the 4-way Open Class rounds of the top teams so far. The story on 13 October 2009 included the videos of Round 1 of the top teams, the next story on the same day Round 2.

A video of the action around the world record Round 6 was also uploaded with the story on 14 October 2009. This video clip of the world record show included the actual video of the jump when it was shown on the DZ-TV screen. However, the actual video file has not been uploaded yet.

Perris Fury's exit in Round 6
The NSL News now rewards the audience for the long wait with a new video that shows the jumps of all teams in Round 6 scoring 30 points and higher. The eight videos begin with the 30-pointer of the Amphibious Attack Tigers, followed in the order of the scores for this round.

The order of the videos is almost identical with the final ranking order, with one exception. Arizona Airspeed did not have the highscore for Round 6. Spaceland Force XP posted the 45-pointer, which was also the new world record for a single round at the same time.

The NSL News had broken the news of the new world record already with an earlier story on the same day. However, neither story included copies of the actual video files, which were later provided by USPA and CamScore.

Ian Bobo with DeLand Genesis
Another video was provided recently by Spaceland Force XP member Thomas Hughes.

It was recorded in the middle of the 4-way action at the USPA Nationals. He may have held it back for so long to find the best timing for posting it, as it is related to Halloween.

The video clip shows his team mate Ian Bobo with a very different and unusual jump preparation, which takes place in the team room. Ian Bobo applies tools that are more commonly used for Halloween preparations.

What does Halloween have in common with skydiving competition? The video shows it, Thomas Hughes is filming it, and Ian Bobo is commenting it while he is busy coloring his hands in white.

Ian Bobo with DeLand Fire
There were times when Ian Bobo used to wear white gloves when his team was competing, as a photo of his very first team, Genesis, shows very clearly. However, he lost his faith in gloves at some point in his competition career.

He had already dropped them when he won his 4-way gold medal at the World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2006 in Germany with DeLand Fire. There are no records or any evidence that he was already using white paint to convince the judges of clear separation and grips. Fact is that he became a 4-way world champion without white gloves.

Obviously, he still tried to make things even easier for the judges this year with his Halloween project. It worked well in Round 6 when his team scored the new world record. The white paint did not do the job though to get past the current world champions from Arizona after ten rounds. Maybe another color...?
