Did You Know...

... that the sequence of Round 10 ended Airspeed's 20-point streak?

Valentine's Meet 2010
posted Feb 14th, 2010 - It is time to catch up with the coverage of the Valentine's Meet 2010. It was a very challenging agenda for the NSL News due to the complications with the itinerary, as the previews of the event explained earlier.

The 6-round meet on Saturday was already completed when the NSL News arrived at Skydive Arizona, and posting the scores was all that could be done yesterday. The Sunday was mostly dedicated to collecting as much footage and information as possible of both days.

The coverage now begins with the most important thing, Arizona Airspeed's competition videos of all ten rounds. There was not much competition for the 4-way world champions in Eloy. However, there was still enough pressure on the team, as the skydiving world would take a very close look at the scores. The NSL News had added extra pressure with the topic of the 20-point scoring streak.

This streak has obviously come to an end after the 18-pointer in Round 10. The NSL News audience who voted on the last NSL Poll trusted Airspeed just as much as Robert Chromy, who thought that Airspeed would "eat round ten for breakfast".

Airspeed was actually much closer to the 20th point than the official score of 18 points shows. The judges, with Judy Celaya leading the panel, deducted one point in this round. The second Monopod of Block 4 was actually missing only Craig Girard's right grip for a 20-pointer within working time. However, it would have been only a 19-pointer after the point deduction.

Trouble with Block 18 in Round 7
The judges did not make it easy for the world champions on their home turf and without any direct competition. The point deduction in Round 10 was not the only one. Airspeed lost a total of seven points, including the one in Round 10. Four penalties alone were assigned to each Block 18 (Zircon - Zircon) in Round 7.

Airspeed still saved all 20-pointers even after those deductions - until Round 10 came along. The 20-point streak is over now, however, the record number of consecutive victories has gone up to 22 meets. There is no doubt that this one was the easiest competition for Airspeed ever since this lineup came together.

The other interesting aspect of the meet data ist the fact that it was another draw of the Valentine's Meet that forced the world champions below 20 points in a round. At the same time, Airspeed is still the only team in history of Formation Skydiving competition that scored a 25-average or higher. Only the penalty situation kept Airspeed from doing it again this weekend. It is time to look at the videos. More information will follow later.
