Did You Know...

... that Teiwaz had a Rookie Class lineup at Skydive City?

FSL on Facebook
posted May 18th, 2010 - The weather played a role at all meets last weekend. It was too cold and miserable in Norway and too hot in Florida for the teams to come out in flocks.

The teams in Denmark were limited to five rounds at the popular DFU Cup.

The new Norwegian national 4-way team X3M4s was actually ready to put the first scores of 2010 on the board. It turned out to be only one single round in challenging weather conditions, while Denmark's national team Bodyflight Voluntas completed five rounds.

The May meet of the Florida Skydiving League was also the smallest one in a long time, although the weather situation was not in the way to complete the meet.

FSL teams of the 2010 season had other plans last weekend or could not make it to Skydive City for several different reasons.

Teiwaz Rookies prepare for Round 1 at Skydive City
However, the event became an opportunity for Teiwaz to send the team's first Rookie Class lineup into a competition. Several different Teiwaz lineups had already attended meets in all other categories in the Teiwaz 12-year history, never in the Rookie Class until last weekend.

There was a good reason for Teiwaz to select the Rookie Class at this meet. Two of the new members, Sebastian Jimenez (Center Inside) and Richard Richmond (Center Outside), attended their first meet ever.

They worked together in the Teiwaz center and made for a very interesting combination, as Sebastian Jimenez is probably the youngest Teiwaz member (29) while Richard Richmond joined 4-way competition with 62 years of age.

Teiwaz veteran Bob Byrne provided guidance from the Tail slot in the first three rounds, and Kurt Gaebel did the same as the Point in the second half of the meet. It was quite impressive how the brandnew 4-way competitors managed to do the center work together.

Marty "Ladybug" Mahoney from Texas was the Point for the first four rounds. She strained a ligament in her arm while exiting the plane in Round 4 and could not complete the meet.

Marty Mahoney had already visited Florida in November 2009 when she competed with her Rookie Class team Hot Flash at the NSL Championship 2009. She came back for work last week and joined the Teiwaz lineup at Skydive City.

Scott Pratt and Paul Barkus with DeLand 5
Ryan Anderson filled the Point slot in Round 5 when Ladybug could not fly any longer. Ryan Anderson competed last year with the Z-Hooligans and was hanging out at Skydive City on the meet day without a lineup.

He had another commitment later the same day, and Paul Barkus stepped in for him in Round 6. Paul Barkus is the Tail for DeLand 5 and had competed with his team at the FSL Shamrock Showdown 2010 in the A Class. He is now a new and proud Teiwaz member, as well.

DeLand 5 videographer Scott Pratt was filming Teiwaz throughout the whole meet in Zephyrhills. He has collected a lot of 4-way experience after filming several Z-Hills lineups in the past years, including DiZturbia and DiZaster. His current team, DeLand 5, will soon move up into the AA Class competition.

Teiwaz Rookie Sebastian Jimenez after a competition jump
The new Rookie Class competitors, Sebastian Jimenez and Richard Richmond, enjoyed their first official competition very much. Richard Richmond's home dropzone is Skydive Miami, and he could not get a lineup together for the meet in Z-Hills. Eventually, he accepted the Teiwaz slot and made the trip anyway.

Sebastian Jimenez is a Skydive City local and has been looking for a slot in a Rookie Class lineup for a while. The Teiwaz opportunity fit perfectly for him, as well, when the other Skydive City locals were not able to produce their own lineup.

The NSL News will go back to Skydive City when the annual 4-way Scramble on the Memorial Day weekend will bring several local and regional Rookie Class lineups together. Event organizer Oren Kalb reported that he is counting 12 teams at the moment. The FSL June meet is scheduled for June 19 at Skydive DeLand.
