Did You Know...

... that the NSL News had to ask Michel Lemay one question?

Lemay family vacation in Dubai
posted Jul 25th, 2010 - Nothing changed for Hayabusa NMP-PCH after Round 6 at the CISM Championship 2010. The NSL News had provided an update from the military world championships on 22 July 2010. No more rounds were completed in Switzerland, and Hayabusa is now on the way to Menzelinsk in Russia and the World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2010.

The Belgian team was not the only one that still had another national obligation last week. Bodyflight Voluntas, the Danish national 4-way team, competed at the national championships before the trip to Russia. The scores are posted, and Voluntas won this year's national 4-way title easily with a 17.9 average.

The NSL News goes back one more time to the recent visit with Canada's national 4-way team Evolution at their home dropzones NouvelAir/Parachute Montreal. Two stories on 8 July 2010 and on 15 July 2010 covered the preparations of the Lemay family for the upcoming world meet. The last story mentioned that the video of a conversation with the whole team would also be uploaded soon, and it can now be reviewed below.

Evolution 2006 lineup in Germany

The Road to Russia

The NSL Talk took place after the debriefing of the second set of five back-to-back training jumps at Parachute Montreal. Father Michel (52) and sons Benoit (19), Vincent (22) and Martin (25) took the extra time before they went back to work on the daily operation of their skydiving centers.

Of course, the main topic was the upcoming competition in Russia. It will be the third consecutive attendance at a World Championship of Formation Skydiving for three team and family members.

Michael, Martin and Vincent Lemay competed for Canada together for the first time in Germany 2006. Benoit Lemay was too young at that time, he was packing for the team. Francois Pigeon had the Tail position in 2006. Evolution finished tied with Spain in 9th place and posted a 16.8 average after five rounds.

Evolution 2008 lineup with coach Shannon Pilcher
Benoit Lemay was already preparing for his slot to come at that time. He spent several hours of wind tunnel training with Arizona Airspeed's Craig Girard. His skills were more than ready when he eventually joined the team in freefall.

Evolution was a complete family affair at the next World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2008 in Maubeuge, France. Benoit Lemay had just turned 18 when he attended his first world meet.

The new Evolution lineup finished in 6th place in 2008, posted a 21.9 average after eight rounds in France and was significanly closer to the medal rankings compared to 2006. The scores at the Midway Battle this year brought the Canadian team even closer to the top.

Family debriefing at Parachute Montreal
The NSL News had to ask the question during the NSL Talk how father Michel Lemay manages to keep up with his three sons. He is 52 years of age, has over 15,000 jumps after 32 years in the sport and works hard to run the family business, which consists of managing two skydiving centers and the new wind tunnel in Montreal.

Michel Lemay surely has to keep in great physical and mental shape to master the many challenges. He gets great support from his three sons, partner and team videographer Daniel Paquette and his staff. However, his days are extremely busy, and he says that it is sometimes difficult to clear his mind for training and competition.

He clears it well enough for a 23.4 average at Skydive Chicago in July. He has also challenged all his "bad old habits" of the past 30 years to move from the "Box Position" at the 10-point average level to the modern "Mantis" flights on world class level. Who knows what his family will be able to achieve at the upcoming world meet?
