Did You Know...

... that the 2010 competition season fades out with record numbers?

SkyQuest 2010
posted Sep 22nd, 2010 - The 2010 competition season in the USA is slowly coming to its end. A few smaller regional meets were still on the NSL Calendar, while teams competed at the USPA Nationals 2010 or on the weekend after the completion in Ottawa. The Florida Skydiving League still has one more meet in October before SkyQuest 2010 invites all teams to attend the NSL Championship at the fun event in DeLand.

Over 100 leaderboards were created in the Skyleague.com database this year, and more stories than ever came along with the scores, videos and photos. A new traffic record of over half a million hits per day made the World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2010 in Menzelinsk the biggest event of the year and in NSL News history.

There will not be so many new scores from here on until the end of the year, however, there is more than enough video footage to follow up on previous events, and topics for NSL News stories are unlimited. The remainder of the year will just be as exciting, as news updates from teams, competitors, events and leagues will continue and lead into the 2011 season.

MASL Rookie Class lineup without Mariaelena Rodriguez...
The most recent meets included the German Cup 2010 and the last event of the MidAtlantic Skydiving League. MASL Director reported a light turnout as some of the regular MASL players were still at Skydive Chicago for the USPA Nationals 2010 or resting after coming home.

Two teams were jumping in the nicest weather of the MASL 2010 season. The NSL News had mentioned new MASL Rookie Class competitor Mariaelena Rodriguez in earlier stories. She now missed her first meet of the season due to a dirt bike injury, and Chris Schrier filled the open slot.

Dennis Miller took it with humor: "Some skydivers are safer in the air than they are on the ground..." He said that she will be back for the next meet, however. Former Air Pollution members Marty Schneider and Rob Fields helped with the judging.

Rich Richmond with Teiwaz in May
The other meet was a 1-team FSL affair at Skydive Miami for similar reasons. However, it was in important and very successful competition for the Miami Dropouts, the new FSL Rookie Class team that attended its 4th meet of the 2010 season.

The Dropouts were initiated by Rich Richmond who first appeared at an FSL meet in May. Skydive City in Zephyrhills was the host, and Teiwaz had an open slot in the team's Rookie Class lineup. The NSL News reported by then:

"There was a good reason for Teiwaz to select the Rookie Class at this meet. Two of the new members, Sebastian Jimenez (Center Inside) and Richard Richmond (Center Outside), attended their first meet ever. They worked together in the Teiwaz center and made for a very interesting combination, as Sebastian Jimenez is probably the youngest Teiwaz member (29) while Richard Richmond joined 4-way competition with 62 years of age."

Miami Dropouts with Bob Byrne
Rich Richmond was hooked after this Teiwaz experience and worked on his own lineup in the south of Florida. Teiwaz regular Bob Byrne helped him as the player coach, John Ferreira and Brian Goodkind soon joined the Miami Dropouts lineup. Lenny Wolf began filming the team.

The Dropouts improved their skills and scores meet by meet and posted their highest meet average of the 2010 season last weekend. Pam Manos took Bob Byrne's player coach position at Skydive Miami. Bob Byrne had just returned from his own Teiwaz outing in the Advanced Class competition of the USPA Nationals 2010.

The 10-pointer in Round 5 was the highest score for a single round since the team was formed, and the 6.5 average after six rounds is the highest meet average. The Dropouts have two more opportunities in Florida to even improve those numbers. The Miami team will also be eligible to defend Florida's Rookie Class championship trophy at SkyQuest 2010 that Team DiZaster won last year after a tough battle with Relativity from Colorado and Hot Flash from Texas.
