Did You Know...

... that Todd Hawkins is the new Perris Fury member?

Perris Fury at the World Challenge 2010
posted Nov 17th, 2010 - The NSL News mentioned yesterday that Perris Fury has selected the new Point. It was a relatively long wait for the NSL News audience. The three returning Fury members (Christy Frikken, Uli Stuewe, Chris Farina) obviously had to take their time to make the best choice possible.

There was also another reason that allowed the team to take it easy. Tail Uli Stuewe recently had a shoulder surgery, and any new lineup would not be able to begin with the training at any time soon.

However, the wait for the name of the new member is over. Todd Hawkins will train and compete with Perris Fury, and he will most likely fly in the open Point slot. Christy Frikken said that she will provide more information after arriving in DeLand for the NSL Championship at SkyQuest 2010.

Todd Hawkins with Arizona Airspeed at the World Meet 2003 in Gap, France...
Todd Hawkins, originally from Australia, is one of the most experienced competitors in the USA. He started his US team career on the way to the top level with Elsinore Matrix in 2000. He spent two years with Matrix (16.7 - 17.8) before he was invited to join Arizona Airspeed at the end of the 2002 season.

He trained and competed with Airspeed's Dragon lineup in 4-way (Kirk Verner, Eliana Rodriguez, Dennis Rook) and prepared with Airspeed's 8-way lineup for the World Meet 2003 in France. The competition with the Russian 8-way team was probably the highlight of his career.

The showdown in Gap, with a jump-off and then a tie breaker according to the rulebook, was one of the closest and most exciting races in the history of the sport. Russia won, and Todd Hawkins missed his first gold medal by an inch.

...and with A4C at the USPA Nationals 2009
From then on, Todd Hawkins has never missed a 10-way or 16-way competition with the Airspeed lineups at USPA Nationals, except during the 2-year break in 2004 and 2005 when he had to recover from a bad landing accident.

He did not make it back to Airspeed in time to compete at the World Meet 2006 in Germany. However, his comeback brought him gold medals in 8-way, 10-way and 16-way at the USPA Nationals 2006.

The same event was his last one for an Airspeed 4-way or 8-way lineup. He trained and competed with other 4-way and 8-way teams between 2007 and 2010 and had his best 4-way result with a pickup team at the USPA Nationals 2009. A4C (John Eagle, John Hamilton, Eric Heinsheimer) posted an 18.9 average last year.

Elsinore Marix lineup of 2000
Todd Hawkins competed with the Founding Fathers this year. John Hamilton was once again his team mate, ten years after they trained and competed together for Elsinore Matrix. Dan BC joined the pickup team at the USPA Nationals 2010, and the Founding Fathers finished with a 16.9 average.

The team split up for 8-way. Dan BC and John Hamilton went back to Airspeed, while Todd Hawkins continued with the Paraclete XP 8-way lineup that he was on since 2009. Then they all came back together for Airspeed's 10- and 16-way lineups.

The new Perris Fury slot is probably the most serious 4-way project in Todd Hawkins' career. Airspeed Dragon in 2003 was also training in 4-way. However, the main Airspeed focus was on 8-way and the showdown with Russia at the World Meet in France. Now he takes on the other 4-way top contenders, including Airspeed with former 8-way team mates Mark Kirkby and Thomas Hughes (Paraclete), and Paraclete XP4 with four more former 8-way team mates.
