Did You Know...

... that Perris Fury lost Dan BC for the USPA Nationals?

Dan BC with 4-way world champion Arizona Airspeed in 1999
posted Aug 25th, 2005 - Former Airspeed world champion Dan BC has been one of the busiest coaches, managers, competitors this year. His move from Eloy, Arizona, to Perris, California, surely did not slow down his agenda. He currently manages the skydiving school in Perris, which is a full time job in itself.

Dan BC has also been a very popular coach for many years. His NSL Profile offers a lot of information of his skydiving life, including the dramatic story of his accident that almost terminated his career for good in 1992. The NSL Profile story ends when Dan BC left Airspeed in 1999.

However, he has been very active ever since. His latest team project was the player coach position with Perris Fury. This new team was started at the begining of the 2005 season. Josh Hall, Uli Stuwe and Christy Frikken formed Perris Fury with the intention to see how far they could take the team with Dan BC in one season.

Perris Fury
Team member Christy Frikken explained the biggest obstacle for Perris Fury: "Our dilemna was that Dan BC is busy running one of the biggest and best dropzones in the world a lot of the time."

The eager 3-way found a way to get over the obstacle and came up with the plan to hire another former Airspeed member, Mark Kirkby, to fill Dan BC's slot for a majority of the team's training camps. It made a lot of sense for Christy Frikken: "Mark would bring us up to speed, and Dan would step in near the end and we'd compete at the nationals."

The Perris Fury plan worked very well throughout the 2005 season as the scores at the three Southwest Skydiving League competitions (16.0 - 18.0 - 19.2) have shown. Dan BC could fulfill his coaching obligations, including recently jobs in Europe with Airkix at the UK Championship and with the German 8-way team at the German Championship, and Perris Fury still maintained the scoring progression.

Sebastian XL with John McIver at the world meet in 2003
Unfortunately, another accident interrupted Dan BC's plans. However, this one was harmless compared to his 1992 experience, and it was not directly related to skydiving at all. Dan BC ruptured his Achilles tendon playing tennis at the beginning of the month.

This was very bad news for Perris Fury, while it was great news for the teams that will attend the USPA Championship 2005 in Perris. The Perris management announced the Dan BC news with the offer of free coaching for all teams attending the competition, and the free coaching will be provided by Dan BC. It will probably be a big work load for the coach.

However, Perris Fury was once again trouble-shooting, and it worked out well again. Christy Frikken explained the solution in a funny way: "So we were scrambling for an inside center who could come close to fill Dan's shoes - or cast, as it is now. We are bringing John McIver for the nationals. This will make us a guest team, but we are excited that Fury will get a chance to jump with him at least a little bit next week before the competition."

John McIver was the inside center for the British national 4-way team Sebastian XL with Pete Allum, Thomas Hughes, Steve Hamilton and Rob Stevenson on a world class level for several years. He probably has the shoe size big enough to take the control center for Perris Fury. The scoreboard will show very soon.
