Did You Know...

... that three Alpha Armada members competed together in 2003?

Southwest Skydiving League competitors in 2003
posted Dec 30th, 2010 - The NSL News goes back one more time to the upcoming female 4-way competition at the Dubai Championship 2011 and the lineup of the US team.

Hannah Betts (Center Inside), Becky Brocato (Tail), Christy Frikken (Center Outside) and Annaliese Peterson (Point) will compete with a new team name: Alpha Armada. The two previous stories on 26 December and 27 December provided the details of the team members and their history together.

The lineup story still got another twist and "fun fact" when Christy Frikken informed the NSL News that she and Annaliese Peterson also share a very short encounter with each other.

They were piece partners for the first time at the August meet of the Southwest Skydiving League 2003. It was Annie Peterson's first 4-way competition, and her team was called "Frikken for Governor".

Frikken for Governor competed in the A Class, and the NSL leaderboard looked still very different in 2003. Webmaster Craig Buxton re-designed the website at the end of the 2003 season. The NSL News published the leaderboard on September 2, 2003, with the following article:

Belgian national team of 2003: NMPV
"A total of 35 teams competed on the August 23-24 weekend in three competition classes. Each class had enough participation to guarantee 30 free minutes of tunel time for the winners of the SkyVenture Competition. It was a slow competition draw for each class, maybe the slowest one of the whole 2003 season. The teams had the opportunity to test their technical skills. Since all teams apply the same competition draw, the results were lower for each team compared to the season average.

The AAA Class had the highest number of teams competing, including teams from Belgium, Spain, Germany and Australia. The Belgian national team NMPV once again took the first place before handicap with a 16.0 meet average. NMPV had just won the overall competition on the prior weekend (August 16-17) when they attended the Belgian Championship 2003.

The free tunnel time went to the winner after handicap, the Perris Mud Hens, after an extremely consistent performance at the last meet of the Southwest Skydiving League 2003. The Mud Hens had just visited SkyVenture Orlando for a very intense tunnel camp the weekend before the meet. They posted five rounds with 11 points and one 12-pointer for a 11.2 meet average and the first place after handicap.

The AA Class offered a surprise. It was the first time in the 2003 season that Windline Lightning of the Florida Skydiving League was defeated by an AA Class team before handicap. Enigma of the Michigan Skydiving League had begun earlier this season to catch up with the leader of the AAA Class from Lake Wales. On the August 23-24 weekend, Enigma won the AA Class competition by one single point over Windline Lightning. And it was almost enough to grab the free tunnel time, as well.

Tucson Tumblers
Only almost. Another team of the Florida Skydiving League scored significantly higher than at their other meet they had attended earlier this year. Zephyrhills Quest had traveled to DeLand for the last meet of the FSL season. The team had competed on their home turf in May (6.0) and posted a significantly higher meet average in August (8.2) with a slower draw.

In the A Class, the last SSL certificate went to a team that deserved it the most. The Tucson Tumblers competed at each of the six SSL meets of the 2003 season and had to travel a lot to make this happen. The Tumblers struggled mostly with their exits in the beginning and improved their skills meet by meet. The performance level went up at the same time. Once the exits were under control, the scores went up. And the consistent improvement (4.8 - 2.5 - 4.3 - 4.2 - 5.3 - 6.0) was rewarded with the team's highest meet average at the very last event of the regular season. And the 6.0 meet average was more than enough to win the SkyVenture Competition after handicap. PMS won the first place in the raw scores with an 8.0 meet average."

Christy Frikken and Brianne Thompson with Audacity in 2003
The article did not mention Christy Frikken's and Annie Peterson's team. However, some of the team names on the leaderboard still sound familiar. Billy Andrews was still competing with Superfly before making it into the Fastrax lineup later. Kris Peterson and Kelly Fredrickson were in the Chikara lineup. Elsinore Adrenaline with John Hamilton and Melanie Curtis won Advanced Class silver medals at the USPA Nationals 2003. Josh Hall was a member of the Mud Hens in 2003, together with Eric Gin who would also join Fastrax and then Arizona Airspeed later.

Enigma won the AA Class competition that weekend, but Windline Lightning would take the Intermediate Class gold medals at the USPA Nationals. Elsinore Equinox would win the USPA Nationals in the Intermediate Class two years later, and Tempest was not Sebastian Tempest...

Last not least, Christy Frikken also competed with another Spaceland Blue member in 2003. She and Brianne Thompson were Arizona Audacity members at the USPA Nationals 2003 and finished as a guest team with an 8.9 average in 21st place. Christy Frikken now fills her Audacity team mate's Center Outside slot in Dubai and flies the front piece with her Frikken for Governor piece partner of 2003.
