Did You Know...

... that 12 teams won 400 minutes of SkyVenture Orlando tunnel time at the NSL Playoffs?

SkyVenture Orlando
posted Sep 2nd, 2005 - The latest scores, which are still posted on the front page, are the ones of the NSL Playoffs 2005 weekend on August 20 - 21. Several meet stories have already covered the events, and the only missing piece was the results of the NSL SkyVenture Orlando Competition.

The NSL News recently caught up with several stories covering the winners of the remaining NSL SkyVenture Orlando Competition weekends of the regular 2005 season. The results of the playoffs are now available, as well.

As in the past years, SkyVenture Orlando once again provided additional free tunnel time for the most improved teams at the major events of the NSL season, the playoffs and the championship. The winner of each class receives one hour of tunnel time in Orlando, the second place is rewarded with 30 minutes, and the third place team still gets ten minutes. The Rookie Class was fully included for the first time in NSL history and justified the additional tunnel time provided by SkyVenture Orlando with increased participation.

Airspeed Odyssey
The AAA Class competition on the NSL Playoffs 2005 weekend saw the same team in first place before and after handicap, Airspeed Odyssey.

This does not happen very often since it is more difficult for the top teams to increase the meet average if they already compete on a high scoring level. The flexible handicap formula considers this and gives the highscorers credit when they improve their meet averages.

However, Airspeed Odyssey completed the first six rounds with great scores and deserves the first place after handicap, as well.

Fastrax Select
Fastrax Select confirmed the rising performance and scoring level toward the end of the season with the second place in the playoffs after handicap. Fastrax Select had just won the 30-minute certificate for the first place on the July 23 weekend. Top positions after handicap always indicate that teams have increased the scoring level. It is the right time for Fastrax Select to get in good shape since the team is after the title as the US national team in the IPC's Women's Class. The second place at the NSL Playoffs 2005 adds another 30 minutes of Orlando tunnel time to the Fastrax Select account.

The third place and a 10-minute SkyVenture Orlando certificate go to Perris Helion. The AAA Class team with Cathy Coon (Point), Bob Lievsay (Tail), Dan Pillasch (Inside Center), Brian Thompson (Outside Center) and Terry Weatherford (Video) was on a steady upswing throughout the regular 2005 season (8.0 - 7.8 - 10.3 - 11.2) and was already very close to the first place and a 30-minute certificate on the July 30 weekend. The third place on the playoffs weekend after handicap offers at least special recognition for the great team efforts with a 10-minute certificate by SkyVenture Orlando.

Soylent Greene
The AA Class was the busiest competition class on August 20 - 21 with a total of 20 teams. Cross Keys (12.5), Arizona Divewerkz (12.2) and Carolina Ice (11.8) took the first three places before handicap and are ready to challenge each other once again and live on site in Perris on Monday.

However, all three teams seem to have settled on a scoring level around 12.0 average. The winner of the whole free hour of tunnel time in Orlando finished in 5th place before handicap with a 9.7 average. Soylent Greene of the Mideast Skydiving League posted the highest meet average of the 2005 season at the right time.

Air Pollution
Kim Allen (Tail), Jared Ashley (Point), Anders Mattson (Center Inside), Shane Willis (Center Outside) and Mike Ashley (Video) showed great progression throughout the 2005 season (7.5 - 9.5 - 8.3 - 9.7), and the playoffs success included a new record score for the team with a 16-pointer in round three.

Cross Keys Air Pollution was only little over one scoring point behind Soylent Greene after handicap and had a very similar scoring progression (7.0 - 8.7 - 8.3 - 8.8) over the 2005 season. The 30-minute certificate for the second place after handicap will go to the Cross Keys. Ready Set Go of the Carolina Skydiving League won the third place and the 10-minute certificate in the AA Class competition.

Chicago Sirens
The A Class competition was under complete control of the Midwest Skydiving League teams once again. Skydive Chicago Furies, Chicago Sirens, Nite Hooker and the Pimps took the first three places before handicap with MWSL's 4-Play in tow. Furies and Sirens switched their positions after handicap with a 0.56 difference.

Both teams deserved their awards of 60 minutes (Sirens) and 30 minutes (Furies) at SkyVenture Orlando, and it was such a close call that either team could have won. The Furies posted their second meet average over 10.0 (7.2 - 10.5 - 10.6) with a team record 15-pointer in round three. The Sirens improved the meet average every single time in 2005, as well (7.0 - 7.5 - 8.6 - 9.8), and also set a new team record with the 14-pointer in round three.

MWSL team 4-Play (3.3 - 5.8 - 5.6 - 7.3) was in fourth place before handicap and managed to pass Nite Hooker and the Pimps (6.8 - 6.8 - 8.0 - 8.2) in the NSL SkyVenture Orlando Competition for the 10-minute certificate.

DC3
The Rookie Class competition on the playoffs weekend had even more participation than the A Class. Mideast Skydiving League team J3 Sputnik was the highscorer with a 10.8 average in the team's first 2005 competition. J3 Sputnik took the first place before handicap and won 10 minutes of SkyVenture Orlando tunnel time with the third place after handicap.

The first and second place after handicap went to Rookie Class teams that had already attended earlier meets of the 2005 season. DC3 is also from the Mideast Skydiving League. Lori Gregory, Doug Lingner, Sara Robinson, Erin Walters improved the meet average from 3.2 in July to 5.7 in August and won the first place and 60 minutes of tunnel time in Orlando after handicap.

Chambersburg 5
Last not least, the second busiest Rookie Class team of the 2005 season, Chambersburg 5 of the MidAtlantic Skydiving League, was rewarded for the great efforts this year. Carol Christian, Eileen Culver, Mike Minicozzi, Matt Nolt and Norris Gearhart on video posted the team's highest meet average at the playoffs (5.2 - 6.8 - 4.8 - 7.0) and won 30 minutes of free tunnel time.

Congratulations from the NSL headquarters and from SkyVenture Orlando to all winners of the NSL Playoffs 2005 before and after handicap. The last NSL event and NSL SkyVenture Orlando Competition of the 2005 season is the NSL Championship at SkyQuest 2005. SkyVenture Orlando will sponsor the event with the same prizes as for the playoffs. JumpInstitute.com also provided $5,000 cash for the jackpot, and the NSL invites all qualified and eligible teams to go after the prizes, trophies and medals.
