Did You Know...

... that eight teams had to re-locate in Georgia?

Georgia Skydiving League teams in 2000
posted May 7th, 2011 - The NSL News goes back in time once again while waiting for scores from the United Kingdom. This time, it is the May meet of the Georgia Skydiving League in 2000, which took place on the same weekend 11 years ago. It was a very interesting event since the competition site was moved at the very last minute.

The first part of the NSL News story was posted on May 6th, the day before the competition. The second part followed next day, but from a different location. The plane situation had changed, and GSL Director Danny Page took quick action by re-locating the meet.

The second story provides a few details of the actual competition, and the NSL News found the complete leaderboard after the conclusion of the meet in the archives. Meet winner Nemesis would later end up in 2nd place of the Advanced Class at the USPA Nationals the same year, 11 points behind FSL team Teiwaz. The Chain Gang finished in 7th place of 30 teams in Perris.

Chain Gang visitors from Florida: Jim Goempel, Kim Griffin

NSL News on 6 May 2000

The second season meet of the Georgia Skydiving League is taking place today at Adventure Skydiving in Rome, Georgia. The competition is hot in Georgia this year. A few teams have a chance to win the GSL 2000 championship. Nemesis won the season opener at Skydive Atlanta in Thomaston in April and took the lead in the GSL rankings.

However, the Chain Gang is eager to fight back today. The Florida half of the Chain Gang left from the DeLand Airport yesterday evening with team captain and pilot Jim Goempel flying a little 4-seat Cessna to Georgia. On board were his team mates Kim Griffin and Seth Cohen, plus NSL News reporter Kurt Gaebel.

The NSL News will be live on site again to report the event as soon as possible after the meet has been concluded. Hopefully, scores, information and pictures will be posted this evening.

Planning meeting for the playoffs with coordinator Glen Hauenstein
The management of the Atlanta Skydiving Center and Eastern Skies Coordinator Glen Hauenstein will also meet Saturday night in Cedartown. The group will discuss the plans for the NSL Playoffs 2000 of the Eastern Skies. This event will be hosted by the Atlanta Skydiving Center in October this year.

Today's competition site in Rome and Cedartown are only thirty minutes driving distance away from each other. The Atlanta Skydiving Center is also hosting the last season meet of the Georgia Skydiving League in August.

NSL and ASC management are interested in preparing the events early to make them successful. However, first of all, today's meet in Rome is up and running.

Mike Powell and Danny Page

NSL News on 7 May 2000

Circumstances in Georgia were forcing league director Danny Page and Mike Powell, owner of Skydive Atlanta, to make some quick calls on Saturday. Originally, Adventure Skydiving in Rome was supposed to be the event host for the second season meet of the Georgia Skydiving League.

The management in Rome had planned to use the Twinotter for the competition, which is usually flying in Thomaston. Paul Fayard is the owner of this plane. Apparently, jump plane arrangements between Skydive Atlanta and Adventure Skydiving never materialized. League and meet director Danny Page explained the situation:

"Mike Powell sent a contract to Rome but never received an answer. I tried to get in touch with the management in Rome, as well. But I could not get a clarification regarding the jump plane for the meet. Finally, Mike said that he will not send the plane to Rome without a written agreement. Since the teams had decided at the season opener's meeting to accept only a Twinotter as the jump plane, I had to move the meet back to Thomaston."

Nemesis lineup of 2000
Mike Powell was not unhappy about this move. He had a successful season opener at his drop zone in April, and he is targeting at the team business anyway. The change of the location still required some quick adjustments. Since Powell decided Friday afternoon not to send the plane to Rome, the teams needed to be informed as soon as possible. The meet schedule required an early take-off Saturday morning.

The phone lines in Georgia got busy Friday afternoon. Finally, all teams were alerted. The Chain Gang, partially flying in from Florida, landed even an hour earlier at the Thomaston airport. Eight teams showed up in the morning, no team had missed the call.

The meet was completed as if nothing had happened. After three rounds, Nemesis was one point ahead of the DeLand Chain Gang. All score, pictures and meet information will be posted later today.
