... that windtunnel training helped the MASL Rookie Class winners?

More tunnel time than others: Dirty Slots with Rob Field
posted Jun 29th, 2011 - The MidAtlantic Skydiving League called the Cross Keys rookies to action once again last weekend. Experienced player coaches helped to form four lineups who completed between four and six rounds.

The strongest MASL Rookie Class team, Dirty Slots, with player coach and former Air Pollution member Rob Fields, even made it to the 2nd place on last weekend's overall Rookie Class leaderboard with a 6.8 average after six rounds. Only the Czech team Hvezdy scored higher in its second Rookie Class year.

MASL Director Dennis Miller reported that the weather at Cross Keys once again just barely held up long enough to complete the meet. The last two loads even provided only a little under 35 seconds working time due to a low ceiling. Dennis Miller said that the meet was engineered to encourage the less experienced skydivers to enjoy 4-way competition, so all the teams used the competition draw of the Rookie Class. He said that the generosity of the host, Freefall Adventures, also allowed hime to provide a player coach flying with each team.

Karl and Cherie Schuch both provided help with coaching and judging. Karl Schuch was also competing as a player coach with Cross Keys AARP. Former Golden Knight Neal Beverly and Dennis Miller himself were the other two player coaches. The player coaching system proved again to offer a great time for the participants, and the MidAtlantic Skydiving League community saw five new faces in the Rookie Class mix.

Dennis Miller also mentioned an interesting aspect of last weekend's event. He said that the team with the lowest jump numbers, disregarding the player coaches, won by a wide margin at Cross Keys. However, Dirty Slots members Jocelyn Lewis (132), Mariaelena Rodriguez (165) and Fritz Carr (119) have more windtunnel flying time with coaching in common than the members of the other lineups. The indoor training seems to help...

The next MASL event is the popular Karp Cup on the July 16 weekend. It's the biggest 4-way event of the season in honor of Jetstream member Seth Karp. It usually has a great turnout and is open for guest teams.
