Did You Know...

... that the Fun Flag was stolen out of Jack Jefferies' hand on the podium in 2001?

Fun Flag in Germany 2006
posted Oct 7th, 2006 - The last part of the Fun Flag story on September 28 mentioned that "Spa Hayabusa members apparently took possession of the Fun Flag at the World Meet 2006 in Germany". This assumption has now become a fact, and the NSL News will get to this issue later. First of all, the story continues with additional comments, which were provided by Omniskore in 2001.

Molly Mercer, who was mentioned by Tim Wagner in his contribution, added her comments during the World Meet 2001 in Spain. It was the time when the whole history of the Fun Flag was explored, initiated by Chris Wagner. Here is what Molly Mercer had to say:

Airspeed's 4-way line-up in 1997

"1997 1st WAG Turkey, Rd 10, Airspeed under canopy, Doug Forth and myself headed out into the field to do the mass mad frenzied congrats dance, so was everyone else from the US delegation. Then it dawned on me ... I thought to myself it's time to put the FUN back in Canada.

So with the help of my tough trusty team mate we saddled up to the Team USA tent and had our way with the twine on the tent pole. After a quick tactual diversion with one of the gals still there we divided and conquered. This was all done with the rules in tack.

Competition on, Flag at site and US delegates on the ground. Lets just say, Laidlaw was a little surprised when he walked into the US tent to congratulate Airspeed and was almost knocked out but when he realized what had happened, the smile was big. I then under Lock and Key managed to get the flag home to Vancouver. (Joester should remember why...catcha haha). During the awards ceremony of the 1999 Nationals in Sebastian, Vertical 8 passed the Fun Flag to Airspeed to take to the next world meet. The reason being: Fun finds Fun, always has - always will! Go Big!"

Russian 8-way team celebrates first gold medals with supporter Alan Metni

There was a lot of great competition action while the Fun Flag history was revealed at the Omniskore website during the World Meet 2001 in Spain. The Russian 8-way team had missed a call for boarding, Alan Metni convinced the jury to allow a re-jump, and the Russians won the 8-way gold medals by one point.

However, there was also real Fun Flag action outside of the Omniskore headquarters at the same time. The Fun Flag was stolen during the award ceremony, and Billy Porter explained what happened:

"We did end up with it! After our failed raid they stole our Canadian flag, so we took their airblade and held it for ransom. I stole the Fun Flag out of Jack Jefferies' hand while he stood on the podium.

They were planning to give it to the Russians. I was only walking behind the stage for a better photo angle when I saw the flag in his hand and decided that it was now or never!"

Spa Hayabusa with the Fun Flag
This is almost too much for normal NSL News business. The story seems to become more and more exciting, parts already sound like scenes from a James Bond movie, and there is more to come. However, the very last events of the story to date has brought the Fun Flag to Belgium.

It is no secret any longer that the Belgium national 4-way team, Spa Hayabusa, stole the Fun Flag during the competition in Germany. The video evidence was already posted earlier on NSL-TV, and Spa Hayabusa has even published a photo of the team with the Fun Flag on the front page of the Hayabusa website.

The NSL News will come back to the Fun Flag history very soon.
