Did You Know...

... that new Fun Flag information comes from Canada?

Wayne Schreiber with team Stratosfear at the Malevsky Cup 2005
posted Dec 29th, 2006 - The NSL News has mentioned the Fun Flag already in several stories. In addition, four separate NSL News stories covered nothing else but the history of the Fun Flag. The story on September 13 included Chris Wagner's summary of the early days. Tim Wagner's and Tim Stevens' contributions were posted on September 28. The story on October 7 added Billy Porter's memories how the Fun Flag was stolen out of Jack Jefferies' hands at the award ceremony, and the last story on October 30 reported of the time when the Fun Flag was in Norwegian possession.

New information was recently provided by a member of the Canadian national 4-way team of 2001 - 2005, Stratosfear. Wayne Schreiber took the time to write down his own experiences and recollections of the Fun Flag. The NSL News witnessed the last phase of the Stratosfear involvement with the Fun Flag at the Malevsky Cup 2005. Here is Wayner Schreiber's story:

Fun Flag rising at the World Meet 2003

Fun Flag 2001 - 2005

I have personally seen the flag change hands a few times. In 2001 the flag was brought to Spain by the members of Airspeed. It was stolen by members of the Canadian 8-way team (Blast). It involved several failed attempts, but at the end of the meet the flag left with the Canadians.

From there it was passed to the new Canadian 4-way team (Stratosfear), who brought it to France in 2003. During this meet, it was stolen by the members of the US 8-way team (Airspeed). It was stolen back briefly, but not held very long. USA took the flag home.

Team USA then brought the flag to the World Meet in Croatia 2004. It was stolen very quickly by the Canadians. This was probably the best theft of the flag I have ever witnessed. It involved many different hand-offs and even a getaway driver with the car running. Team USA didn't really have much chance to defend it.

The Canadian 4-way team also flew the Fun Flag at the Malevesky Cup in 2005. It was defended well, and never stolen. For 2006, Canada's new 4-way representatives (Evolution) took the flag to Germany.

Fun Flag 2005 - 2006

The details of the Fun Flag journey from then on have been reported by the NSL News in detail. The story on August 5 reported that the Fun Flag had arrived in Germany, and the first official Fun Flag photo of the World Meet 2006 was published by the NSL News.

The story on August 7 showed and explained where the Evolution members were flying the Fun Flag at the competition site in Germany. There were already mentions of rumors how the flag would disappear this time.

The plans were obviously executed properly since the NSL News story on August 8 already confirmed that the Fun Flag was stolen during the competition. NSL-TV was even able to provide video evidence of the theft.

The Fun Flag never re-appeared in Germany. However, the NSL News was once again able to track down the path. A photo of the European Skydiving League Championship 2006 in Spa, Belgium, provided by Willy Boeykens, showed the Fun Flag hanging high in the skydiving center's activity hangar. The NSL News story on September 13 included the photo of the flag.

Spa Hayabusa with the Fun Flag
Finally, the Belgium national 4-way team, Spa Hayabusa, admitted to be guilty of the theft in Germany and provided the NSL News with the most important team photo in Hayabusa's history. It is the most recent picture of the Fun Flag, it is the first time that the flag rests in Belgium, and it was also the last competition for Sven Ibens. This most recent part of the Fun Flag history was covered with the NSL News story on October 7.

It is only a matter of time when the story will be continued. There is a good chance that the first events of the 2007 season in Belgium might bring new showings of the Fun Flag. The NSL News also waits for a Hayabusa update after the personnel change.

In addition, the Canadian team Evolution currently trains in DeLand, and the NSL News will try to get more details of the Fun Flag events in Germany very soon. Evolution has also other interesting team information for the NSL News audience, which will be discussed with the team, as well.
