Did You Know...

... that this year's Perris Fury project concludes at the NSL Championship 2007?

posted Oct 4th, 2007 - Perris Fury already had a very busy 2007 season, which included a lot of team training and four competitions with the original line-up. Chris Farina (Inside Center), Christy Frikken (Outside Center), Josh Hall (Point) and Uli Steuwe (Tail) have a season average of 22.1 in the books after these four meets.

The 24.7 average at the July meet of the California Skydiving League was the peak of the 2007 season. The 33-pointer in Round 5 of the same meet is the highest Fury score for a single round. The 22.1 season average and the 20.9 average at the USPA Nationals 2007 was still only good enough for the 4th place in Ottawa. Airspeed Odyssey, Team Fastrax Red and the Golden Knights turned out to be too strong and too consistent for an underdog that could possibly create a serious upset.

Perris Fury will hopefully be able to use the valuable experiences and become a top contender in the near future. NSL-TV has uploaded a new video of the USPA Nationals 2007, which features Perris Fury's Round 9.

All Fury members were also very busy working all year on the team's coaching project in Perris. The NSL News story on September 11 provided an overview of the project activities and the presence of the project's 8-way teams at the USPA Nationals 2007.

The Perris Fury project was not limited to the 8-way teams that competed in Ottawa, and the Fury members did not only compete with their original line-up this year. Uli Steuwe and Chris Farina attended additional two meets as player coaches for Perris Jimani. Josh Hall attended three more meets as a player coach for Perris Momentum. Christy Frikken filled 4-way slots here and there and was mostly involved with her all-female 8-way team Perris Moxie.

Perris Jimani
The extremely busy work and project schedule makes it very challenging for a full-time team like Perris Fury. In fact, the "full-time" phrase in this case actually stands for a team that consists of players who spend their lives at skydiving centers. Full-time training for competition is still only a vision for most of the "full-time" teams.

However, the work that the Perris Fury members and other full-time teams do to return benefits to the supporting skydiving centers and the team sponsors is also great for the sport.

The training projects create new teams and competitors and motivate more skydivers to join the 4-way and 8-way community. The player coaching system works very well and is very efficient for the participants.

Perris Momentum
Perris Jimani and Perris Momentum did not travel to compete at the USPA Nationals 2007 since both teams would miss their player coaches in Ottawa. However, they had already completed other plans earlier this year. Perris Jimani and Perris Momentum will attend the NSL Championship 2007 where they will be able to compete with the original line-ups.

Perris Jimani (Uli Stuewe, Chris Farina, Judy White, Jim Earman, Nik Daniel on camera) will represent the California Skydiving League and the Perris Fury project in the AA Class competition. Perris Momentum (Craig Babb, Tom Brotherton, Nate Halprin, Josh Hall) will compete in the A Class.

Christy Frikken with Perris Moxie
The missing Fury member, Christy Frikken, will also bring her own line-up to DeLand at the end of the month. Her other three team members are Katie Pelland, Brian Sawatzky, Brooke Baum. This line-up will also compete in the AA Class and still has to find a team name.

Katie Pelland is one of Perris' 4-way enthusiasts who trained and competed with Perris Paragon in 2006. This year, she focused on her individual skills and 8-way (Perris Activ8). She did not have a trained 4-way team and competed with the pick-up team Perris Premonition at the USPA Nationals 2007.

Perris Paragon of 2006
Brian Sawatzky competed as the Inside Center for Perris Paragon in Ottawa, a Perris team that attended several regional meets in California last year. Christy Frikken said that he "digs 4-way so much that he chose to join our line-up as the Tail for the NSL Championship 2007".

She added that "Brooke Baum is another incredibly enthusiastic local skydiver who also just can't seem to get enough 4-way. This is her first major 4-way experience, and she has picked up the discipline and the block techniques quickly to round out our team."

DeLand Majik with the NSL Shugar Cup
The three 4-way teams of the Perris Fury project picked a great meet weekend for the final event of the 2007 season. The NSL Championship usually offers a casual and relaxed meet environment, combined with a fun atmosphere. The NSL News story on September 22 also explained that the October 26 - 28 weekend offers additional activities in DeLand, which promise to make the event even more appealing.

The meet management will encourage the Perris Fury members to add even more action to the competition and the project agenda. There will hopefully be enough time and energy left for the Fury members to compete with the original line-up, as well. The NSL Shugar Cup needs new prominent names on the plates. DeLand Genesis, Golden Knights, DeLand Majik, Arizona Blade already have their names engraved. The chances are good for Perris Fury to take the trophy back to California for a year...
