Did You Know...

... that Christy Frikken has an even better vision now?

Perris Fury in DeLand
posted Nov 12th, 2007 - Perris Fury's recent trip to Florida and the NSL Championship 2007 was only one stop of a longer journey. All team members traveled to Great Britain a few days after the meet weekend in DeLand. A windtunnel camp in Bedford was next on the agenda.

Perris Fury held a short training camp at Bodyflight Bedford, working with three British teams and a couple of individuals, as Christy Frikken reported after the trip.

British national 4-way team Bodyflight Storm
Fury started the camp by flying with Bodyflight Storm, the new British 4-way champion and national 4-way team in IPC's female category. The Fury project is the logical progression of Dan BC's P3 coaching program, and it is the same program Storm has used to achieve the high meet averages in a short period of time.

Both teams' plans and philosophies are very compatible, which allowed Fury to do highly productive sessions of 2-on-2. Two Fury members and two Storm members were always flying together. This format can lead another team precisely to the next performance level, either through improved random pace or better block techniques.

Perris Fury has already applied the same format during the season in Perris with impressive results. The NSL News story on July 15 had mentioned the 2-on-2 project with Bodyflight Storm, and the Bedford work last week was not different.

Christy Frikken explained that good results from a 2-on-2 camp are not coming automatically by just flying with a better team:

"Often, when teams do 2-on-2 with a more advanced team, they just go for a ride. It is a lot of fun, but there isn't much planning or strategy to it. We set very specific goals when we work with a team like Storm. Storm is currently scoring an 18-average, which means they have the ability to do a 20-average. During the 2-on-2 Fury can show them exactly what a 20-average feels like. With that clear picture in mind they can reproduce it on their own."

The Fury members also worked with a newly formed British team, Paradox (Sophie Cook, Martine Howland, Elaine Curtis, Chris Cook). Paradox had already trained with several coaches this year, including Dan BC in Perris. Paradox used the Fury opportunity to get an early introduction to the P3 plan that the team will follow next year.

The final leg of the camp was the training for the Fury line-up. The new continuity plan with memory and slot switchers for both pieces were on the agenda.

Fury took advantage of the extra space in Bedford to train a lot of the team's B-slot blocks and sequences. Switching back and forth between Storm's completely mirrored plan, due to the exits from Pilatus Porter next year, and Fury's new continuity plan proved to be challenging and a ton of fun.

Dr. Joel Shugar with Optic Nerve at the FSL Shamrock Showdown 2007
The Fury members scattered for a short break after the NSL Championship 2007, training and coaching.

Chris Farina and Josh Hall stayed in Europe for some more traveling and exploring, while Uli Steuwe was using the opportunity for a visit with his family in Germany.

Christy Frikken returned to Florida. She had scheduled an appointment with Optic Nerve founder, Dr. Joel Shugar, to get a Lasik eye surgery:

"I could not resist the chance to take up any possible advantage when it comes to 4-way, and slipping visual acuity was starting to become a big nuisance. Since clear sight is such a vital part of achieving my 4-way dreams, I wanted to go with someone skilled and trusted. I had heard about Dr. Joel Shugar in the 4-way community, and it wasn't long before this became my obvious choice."

It was a great experience for Fury's Center Outside, and she provided her feedback for the NSL News after the surgery:

"I finished the surgery last Wednesday, and the whole process had me feeling comfortable and confident the whole time. The surgery didn't last very long and was actually pain free. Even though I'm usually very jumpy and squeamish when it comes to eye issues, the staff was immensely calming.

I was kept relaxed because I could chat with Dr. Joel about 4-way through the whole thing. The results were fantastic, I've been constantly delighted how well I could see the very next day. I'm eagerly anticipating jumping with Fury again, so I can see how the improved sight improves my game."

Project team Jimani at the NSL Championship 2007
Perris Fury has a busy winter season planned when the complete team has arrived back at home. Perris will be hosting the annual P3/Fury Team Building Weekend over the Thanksgiving weekend. Friday and Saturday are a chance for potential teammates to search for each other and learn how to form a team for the 2008 season.

Christy Frikken said that attendees range from people searching for their future world-champion team all the way to beginners who just want to know more about how a 4-way team is formed. She added that everyone is welcome to attend the event, even if the goal is just to spend the day doing great 4-way with Dan BC, Perris Fury, and the P3 coaches.

The P3/Fury Team Building Project is also available for skydivers who cannot attend this coming event, as Frikken explained: "Those who cannot attend can add their names to the growing list and will be contacted by others. Additional information, with forms and further details, can be found at the Perris website."

The Perris Holiday Boogie is the next special event for Perris Fury. All four team members will be coaching for free during the first week of the boogie. Christy Frikken provided information of the event:

Power Play jump over Perris
"This event can accommodate anyone from the newly licensed skydiver looking to do some great 2-ways, those seeking great pick-up 4-way, or even want to practice big-way skills. Each Fury member can be contact to register for the free coaching."

Perris Fury and Dan BC will then be organizing warm-ups for the Power Play on the weekend of December 29/30. This is the chance for 4-way and 8-way enthusiasts to do some of the best mid-range sequential jumps in the 16- to 40-range.

The Fury members will use all these events to put together their ambitious line-ups for the six different 8-way teams of the Fury 2008 project. Applications have already been rolling in and will be accepted through the warm-up weekend in January. This warm-up weekend is open to anyone who wants to do 8-way, not just for the applicants for an 8-way slot. More details and news are available at the Perris Fury website.
