Did You Know...

... that France has taken back the world's 4-way top spot?

Mathieu Quizy and Tom Mattoni for France in 2022
posted Feb 3rd, 2025 - The Wind Games 2025 were completed on Saturday and offered the exciting competition that was expected. The 4-way world has turned the way it only makes sense, with the French Aethers Medjay taking the top position. However, the takeover and the new power situation between the world's best 4-way teams were even more dramatic than expected.

The NSL Power Rankings in the preview on January 26th were showing the French national team in 4-way Open, Aethers Medjay, in 1st place without any other contenders for the top spot. The exciting battle would take place behind the world's new top team.

There were times in the history of 4-way formation skydiving competition when one and the same team would dominate a time period. It was still very unusual that this dominating team would win all ten rounds of any high-profile competition. In fact, only the Arizona Airspeed lineup of 2020 - 2024 was so far ahead of any other 4-way teams in the world that they would post the highscores for all ten rounds at all FAI indoor and outdoor world world championships and world cups since April 2022, with one exception in Round 2 of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022, and another one in Round 9 of the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023. Two different French lineups won the two only rounds against Arizona Airspeed in the same time period, and Aethers members Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy were in both of them. They competed with their complete current Aethers lineup in Slovakia 2023 where they won their second round over Airspeed, while they still lost by 15 points.

Potential national indoor teams for the upcoming indoor world championships in yellow

Aethers Medjay (FR) at the Wind Games 2025
Mathieu Quizy and Tom Mattoni for France in 2023
The distance of the Aethers to Arizona Airspeed was even longer at the outdoor competition of the 26th FAI World Formation Skydiving Championships with 21 points, and French national coach Mathieu Bernier was not happy with the outcome. However, he still trusted the talent and potential of the lineup and committed them for another two years after the 2nd place at Crystal Springs.

Mathieu Bernier is probably proud of his national team in 4-way Open after the Wind Games, where Aethers Medjay posted the highscores for all ten rounds. It is unlikely that the world's only missing top teams, Arizona Airspeed's new lineup and Qatar Tigers, would have interfered with the dominating French performance in Spain.

Aethers Medjay did not only win the competition, which was obviously not a big surprise, at least not according to the NSL Power Rankings. It was almost shocking how the young French team created a 33-point winning margin after ten rounds that all teams completed, and they finished with a 34.1 average. There are only three other teams who have ever performed on the 34+ average level, Arizona Airspeed, NMP PCH HayaBusa and Weembi High Rollers. The Belgian signature lineup of NMP PCH HayaBusa (Dennis Praet, Jeroen Nollet, David and Andy Grauwels) are the only team who ever broke through the 35-average benchmark twice in 2019.

Potential national indoor teams for the upcoming indoor world championships in yellow
Aethers Medjay at the Shamrock Showdown 2024
It will not be a surprise any longer if Aethers Medjay might become the next team on the 35+ average level. They have more than two months to prepare for the next ten indoor rounds and the world championship at Paraclete XP in April.

The outdoor distance of 21 points to Arizona Airspeed at Crystal Springs 2024 was also partially caused by a very unfortunate accident right before the Shamrock Showdown 2024. Young outside center Tom Mattoni broke his leg at the landing of a training jump and had to stay away from outdoor training and competition for half a year. It was in fact quite impressive how his team still managed to tie four outdoor rounds at the world championship and finished in 2nd place.

Aethers Medjay are ready now to take the world's top position, as the first scores of the year were showing at the Wind Games. They might dominate 4-way competition even in a similar way as Arizona Airspeed did with the previous lineup. Arizona Airspeed and Qatar Tigers had personnel changes in their lineups, while Aethers have come back with Damien Gouriou, Alban Rumolo, Tom Mattoni and Mathieu Quizy, while national coach Mathieu Bernier continues his work with the team. The French national team will take on the best U.S. indoor team again at the indoor world championship and then return to the same place at Skydive DeLand for the Shamrock Showdown 2025, where the best U.S. outdoor teams, including Arizona Airspeed, will try to put pressure on the world's new number one in 4-way Open.
